How To Fix Your Necktie

The tie's predecessor, the cravat, had quickly grown in popularity during the Industrial Revolution as men made the transition from farm work to factory jobs. The modern necktie was created and patented by Jesse Langsdorf, an American tailor, in 1924. Tie sales peaked in 1995, but have since steadily dropped as business casual dress codes have increased. Neckties are often deemed necessary in many situations. The Windsor knot is the most commonly used method for tying a necktie.

Instructions:

    • 1
Drape the tie around the wearer's neck with the wide end on the right and the narrow end on the left. The wide end should fall just past the navel. The narrow end should reach halfway to the end of the wide end.
    • 2
Cross the wide end over the narrow end about 3 inches below the collar.
    • 3
Loop the wide end of the tie behind and over the "V," or loop, made by crossing the two sides.
    • 4
Fold the wide end of the tie under the narrow end below the "V."
    • 5
Hold the "V" with your right hand while crossing the wide end of the tie over it. The wide end will create a loop in front of the "V."
    • 6
Cross the wide end under and over the "V;" pull it through the loop you created.
    • 7
Adjust the lengths of both tie ends until the wide end rests within a few inches of your waistband.
